A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Help Viewer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Help Viewer in Apple Mac OS X before 10.6.2 does not use an HTTPS connection to retrieve Apple Help content from a web site, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to send a crafted help:runscript link, and thereby execute arbitrary code, via a spoofed response.
The weakness was shared 11/10/2009 by Nicolas Joly with Vmware (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-2808 since 08/17/2009. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42434 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116692 (Apple Mac OS X 10.6.2 and Security Update 2009-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2009-11-09-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
