slapd/back-bdb/modrdn.c in the BDB backend for slapd in OpenLDAP 2.3.39 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a modrdn operation with a NOOP (LDAP_X_NO_OPERATION) control, a related issue to CVE-2007-6698.

The bug was discovered 02/07/2008. The weakness was presented 02/13/2008 by Ralf Haferkamp with SuSE.de (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0658 since 02/07/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31076 (Fedora 7 : openldap-2.3.34-7.fc7 (2008-1616)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117353 (CentOS Security Update for OpenLDAP (CESA-2008:0110)).
