Adaptive Firewall in Apple Mac OS X before 10.6.2 does not properly handle invalid usernames in SSH login attempts, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain login access via a brute-force attack (aka dictionary attack).
The weakness was released 11/10/2009 by Nicolas Joly with Vmware (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-2818 since 08/17/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
