The License Logging Server (llssrv.exe) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an RPC message containing a string without a null terminator, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow in the LlsrLicenseRequestW method, aka "License Logging Server Heap Overflow Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was released 11/11/2009 by Cody Pierce with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2523 since 07/17/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/30/2025).
