Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the read_channel_data function in plug-ins/file-psd/psd-load.c in GIMP 2.6.7 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PSD file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2009 by Stefan Cornelius with Secunia Research as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-3909 since 11/09/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68601 (Oracle Linux 5 : gimp (ELSA-2012-1181)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120570 (CentOS Security Update for GIMP (CESA-2012:1181)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54304), Tenable (68601), SecurityFocus (BID 37040†), OSVDB (60178†) and Secunia (SA37348†). The entries VDB-61787 and VDB-58335 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
