Summary
A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Apple CUPS up to 1.1.4. This affects the function LZWReadByte of the file giftoppm.c of the component GIF Decoder. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2896. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple CUPS up to 1.1.4 (Printing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function LZWReadByte of the file giftoppm.c of the component GIF Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The LZW decompressor in the LWZReadByte function in giftoppm.c in the David Koblas GIF decoder in PBMPLUS, as used in the gif_read_lzw function in filter/image-gif.c in CUPS before 1.4.7, the LZWReadByte function in plug-ins/common/file-gif-load.c in GIMP 2.6.11 and earlier, the LZWReadByte function in img/gifread.c in XPCE in SWI-Prolog 5.10.4 and earlier, and other products, does not properly handle code words that are absent from the decompression table when encountered, which allows remote attackers to trigger an infinite loop or a heap-based buffer overflow, and possibly execute arbitrary code, via a crafted compressed stream, a related issue to CVE-2006-1168 and CVE-2011-2895.
The weakness was published 08/19/2011 with Red Hat Security Response Team as Bug 727800 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-2896 since 07/27/2011. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68600 (Oracle Linux 6 : gimp (ELSA-2012-1180)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120570 (CentOS Security Update for GIMP (CESA-2012:1181)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69180), Tenable (68600), SecurityFocus (BID 49148†), Secunia (SA45621†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025929†).
