The zend_restore_ini_entry_cb function in zend_ini.c in PHP 5.3.0, 5.2.10, and earlier versions allows context-specific attackers to obtain sensitive information (memory contents) and cause a PHP crash by using the ini_set function to declare a variable, then using the ini_restore function to restore the variable.

The weakness was disclosed 12/01/2009 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz with SecurityReason (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2626 since 07/28/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44041 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : php (MDVSA-2010:008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165243 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:005)).
