Ruby on Rails up to 2.0.2 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Ruby on Rails. This vulnerability affects unknown code. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-7248. The attack may be initiated remotely. In addition, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Ruby on Rails (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Ruby on Rails 2.1 before 2.1.3 and 2.2.x before 2.2.2 does not verify tokens for requests with certain content types, which allows remote attackers to bypass cross-site request forgery (CSRF) protection for requests to applications that rely on this protection, as demonstrated using text/plain.

The weakness was presented 12/15/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-7248 since 12/11/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44980 (openSUSE Security Update : rubygem-actionpack (rubygem-actionpack-1946)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165243 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:005)).

Upgrading to version 2.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54988), Exploit-DB (33402), Tenable (44980), Secunia (SA36600†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24977†).
