Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL up to 8.2.10 (Database Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function index. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
PostgreSQL 7.4.x before 7.4.27, 8.0.x before 8.0.23, 8.1.x before 8.1.19, 8.2.x before 8.2.15, 8.3.x before 8.3.9, and 8.4.x before 8.4.2 does not properly manage session-local state during execution of an index function by a database superuser, which allows remote authenticated users to gain privileges via a table with crafted index functions, as demonstrated by functions that modify (1) search_path or (2) a prepared statement, a related issue to CVE-2007-6600 and CVE-2009-3230.
The weakness was disclosed 12/14/2009 as Bug 546321 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-4136 since 12/01/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68044 (Oracle Linux 5 : postgresql (ELSA-2010-0429)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155662 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PostgreSQL (ELSA-2010-0427)).
Upgrading to version 8.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68044), SecurityFocus (BID 37333†), OSVDB (61039†), Secunia (SA37663†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1023326†). The entries VDB-13593, VDB-51723 and VDB-51151 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
