Details
A vulnerability has been found in PostgreSQL up to 8.2.10 (Database Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
PostgreSQL 7.4.x before 7.4.27, 8.0.x before 8.0.23, 8.1.x before 8.1.19, 8.2.x before 8.2.15, 8.3.x before 8.3.9, and 8.4.x before 8.4.2 does not properly handle a \0 character in a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, which (1) allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL-based PostgreSQL servers via a crafted server certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, and (2) allows remote attackers to bypass intended client-hostname restrictions via a crafted client certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, a related issue to CVE-2009-2408.
The weakness was released 12/14/2009 by Dan Kaminsky (Moxie Marlinspike) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at postgresql.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-4034 since 11/20/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52689 (SuSE 11 Security Update : PostgreSQL (SAT Patch Number 1766)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165248 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:001)).
Upgrading to version 8.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (52689), SecurityFocus (BID 37334†), OSVDB (61038†), Secunia (SA37663†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1023325†).
