A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in phpMyAdmin (Database Administration Software). This issue affects the function unserialize of the component Setup Script. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
scripts/setup.php (aka the setup script) in phpMyAdmin 2.11.x before 2.11.10 calls the unserialize function on the values of the (1) configuration and (2) v[0] parameters, which might allow remote attackers to conduct cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 01/19/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at phpmyadmin.svn.sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-4605. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44324 (phpMyAdmin setup.php unserialize() Arbitrary PHP Code Execution (PMASA-2010-3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165248 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:001)).
Upgrading to version 2.11.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
