Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 ip_frag_reasm memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2. The affected element is the function ip_frag_reasm. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2009-1298. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function ip_frag_reasm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The ip_frag_reasm function in net/ipv4/ip_fragment.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.32-rc8, and 2.6.29 and later versions before 2.6.32, calls IP_INC_STATS_BH with an incorrect argument, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and hang) via long IP packets, possibly related to the ip_defrag function.

The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was presented 12/08/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-1298. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/28/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 340 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43035 (Fedora 11 : kernel-2.6.30.9-102.fc11 (2009-12786)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165244 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:001)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (43035), SecurityFocus (BID 36379†), OSVDB (60788†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24296†). See VDB-51129, VDB-51127, VDB-50979 and VDB-50978 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
