A vulnerability was found in phpGroupWare 0.9.16.12 (Groupware Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the file addressbook/csv_import.php. The manipulation of the argument conv_type with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in phpGroupWare 0.9.16.12, and possibly other versions before 0.9.16.014, allow remote attackers to (1) read arbitrary files via the csvfile parameter to addressbook/csv_import.php, or (2) include and execute arbitrary local files via the conv_type parameter in addressbook/inc/class.uiXport.inc.php.
The weakness was disclosed 07/22/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-4415 since 12/24/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:addressbook/csv_import.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44842 (Debian DSA-1978-1 : phpgroupware - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175057 (Debian Security Update for Phpgroupware (DSA-1978)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.16.12 eliminates this vulnerability.
