A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library 2.7/2.10.2 (Software Library). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function getpwnam. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-255. nis/nss_nis/nis-pwd.c in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.7 and Embedded GLIBC (EGLIBC) 2.10.2 adds information from the passwd.adjunct.byname map to entries in the passwd map, which allows remote attackers to obtain the encrypted passwords of NIS accounts by calling the getpwnam function.
The issue has been introduced in 11/16/2009. The weakness was published 01/14/2010 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0015 since 12/14/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1552 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 59 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44838 (Debian DSA-1973-1 : glibc, eglibc - information disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165616 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update glibc (SUSE-SA:2010:052)).
