A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 0.5 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file vp3.c. Off-by-one error in the VP3 decoder (vp3.c) in FFmpeg 0.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted VP3 file that triggers an out-of-bounds read and possibly memory corruption.
The issue has been introduced in 03/02/2010. The weakness was disclosed 02/09/2010 by Will Dormann (Website). The advisory is available at roundup.ffmpeg.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-4631 since 02/09/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/30/2026).
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70647 (GLSA-201310-12 : FFmpeg: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175079 (Debian Security Update for Ffmpeg-debian (DSA-2000)).
