Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 1.2 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function mm_decode_inter of the file libavcodec/mmvideo.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The mm_decode_inter function in mmvideo.c in libavcodec in FFmpeg before 1.2.1 does not validate the relationship between a horizontal coordinate and a width value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access and application crash) via crafted American Laser Games (ALG) MM Video data.
The issue has been introduced in 03/07/2013. The weakness was published 05/02/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at ffmpeg.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3672 since 05/24/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 56 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70647 (GLSA-201310-12 : FFmpeg: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
