Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Squid Proxy up to 2.5 (Firewall Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function htcpHandleTstRequest of the file htcp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The htcpHandleTstRequest function in htcp.c in Squid 2.x before 2.6.STABLE24 and 2.7 before 2.7.STABLE8, and htcp.cc in 3.0 before 3.0.STABLE24, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via crafted packets to the HTCP port.
The weakness was shared 02/12/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-0639 since 02/15/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75745 (openSUSE Security Update : squid (openSUSE-SU-2012:0102-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195052 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Squid Vulnerability (USN-904-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11516.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75745), SecurityFocus (BID 38212†), OSVDB (62297†), Secunia (SA38812†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1023587†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
