A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun OpenOffice up to 3.1.1 (Office Suite Software). Affected by this issue is the function XPMReader::ReadXPM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Integer overflow in the XPMReader::ReadXPM function in filter.vcl/ixpm/svt_xpmread.cxx in OpenOffice.org (OOo) before 3.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted XPM file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was published 02/16/2010 by Sebastian Apelt with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2949 since 08/23/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67995 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : openoffice.org (ELSA-2010-0101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165587 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update OpenOffice.org (SUSE-SA:2010:017)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9565.
