A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Oracle Fusion Middleware 8.3.5/8.3.7 (Middleware). This affects an unknown function of the component Outside In Technology. Heap-based buffer overflow in the jpc_cox_getcompparms function in libjasper/jpc/jpc_cs.c in JasPer 1.900.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted numrlvls value in a coding style default (COD) marker segment in a JPEG2000 file.
The weakness was disclosed 01/17/2012 by Jonathan Foote with CERT/CC (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-4516 since 11/22/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68403 (Oracle Linux 6 : jasper (ELSA-2011-1807)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169365 (OpenSuSE Security Update for jasper (openSUSE-SU-2016:2737-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12275.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (71700), Tenable (68403), SecurityFocus (BID 50992†), OSVDB (77595†) and Secunia (SA47306†).
