Oracle Fusion Middleware 8.3.5/8.3.7 Outside In Technology memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Fusion Middleware 8.3.5/8.3.7 (Middleware) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Outside In Technology. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The jpc_crg_getparms function in libjasper/jpc/jpc_cs.c in JasPer 1.900.1 uses an incorrect data type during a certain size calculation, which allows remote attackers to trigger a heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code, or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption), via a crafted component registration (CRG) marker segment in a JPEG2000 file.

The weakness was presented 01/17/2012 by Jonathan Foote with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4517 since 11/22/2011. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57378 (CentOS 6 : jasper (CESA-2011:1807)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169365 (OpenSuSE Security Update for jasper (openSUSE-SU-2016:2737-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12277.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (71701), Tenable (57378), SecurityFocus (BID 50992†), OSVDB (77596†) and Secunia (SA47306†). See VDB-5245, VDB-5178, VDB-5221 and VDB-5203 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
