A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 3.6 (Web Browser) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function imgContainer::InternalAddFrameHelper. Use-after-free vulnerability in the imgContainer::InternalAddFrameHelper function in src/imgContainer.cpp in libpr0n in Mozilla Firefox 3.6 before 3.6.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a multipart/x-mixed-replace animation in which the frames have different bits-per-pixel (bpp) values.
The weakness was presented 03/25/2010 by regenrecht as Bug 547143 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0164. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/03/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45520 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : firefox (MDVSA-2010:070-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 3.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9620.
