A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in FTP Server in Apple Mac OS X Server before 10.6.3 allows remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via crafted filenames.
The weakness was disclosed 03/30/2010 by Patrik Karlsson with Laconic Security as HT4077 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-0501. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45381 (Mac OS X FTP Server Directory Traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117331 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2010-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-03-29-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
