Linux Kernel 2.6.2 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Use-after-free vulnerability in net/ipv4/tcp_input.c in the Linux kernel 2.6 before 2.6.20, when IPV6_RECVPKTINFO is set on a listening socket, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) via a SYN packet while the socket is in a listening (TCP_LISTEN) state, which is not properly handled and causes the skb structure to be freed.

The issue has been introduced in 02/04/2004. The weakness was disclosed 03/31/2010 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1188 since 03/30/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2247 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63934 (RHEL 5 : kernel (RHSA-2010:0439)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155656 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel Security, Bug Fix, and Enhancement Update (ELSA-2010-0394)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (63934), SecurityFocus (BID 39016†), Secunia (SA39652†), SecurityTracker (ID 1023992†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25608†). The entries VDB-52617 and VDB-52212 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
