thumb.php in MediaWiki before 1.15.2, when used with access-restriction mechanisms such as img_auth.php, does not check user permissions before providing scaled images, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and read private images via unspecified manipulations.
The weakness was shared 03/31/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1190 since 03/30/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:thumb.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45337 (Debian DSA-2022-1 : mediawiki - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165229 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:010)).
Upgrading to version 1.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
