Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun JRE 1.3.1 27/1.4.2 25/1.5.0/1.6.0 (Programming Language Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component Libraries. The manipulation of the argument integer with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in the Sound component in Oracle Java SE and Java for Business 6 Update 18, 5.0 Update 23, 1.4.2_25, and 1.3.1_27 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the March 2010 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a reliable researcher that this is related to XNewPtr and improper handling of an integer parameter when allocating heap memory in the com.sun.media.sound libraries, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code.
The weakness was disclosed 03/31/2010 by Peter Vreugdenhil (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0843 since 03/03/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/04/2026). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46807 (GLSA-201006-18 : Oracle JRE/JDK: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165594 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update IBM Java 6 (SUSE-SA:2010:026)).
A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9648.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (46807), SecurityFocus (BID 39083†), OSVDB (63492†), Secunia (SA39317†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25253†). The entries VDB-51744, VDB-52534, VDB-52533 and VDB-52530 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
