Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 cifs_create null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2. This impacts the function cifs_create. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1148. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function cifs_create. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The cifs_create function in fs/cifs/dir.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.33.2 and earlier allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a NULL nameidata (aka nd) field in a POSIX file-creation request to a server that supports UNIX extensions.

The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was released 04/12/2010 as Bug 579445 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1148. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 473 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49671 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2010:0664-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195103 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-source-2.6.15 Vulnerabilities (USN-947-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57561), Tenable (49671), SecurityFocus (BID 39186†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25387†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-52678, VDB-52672 and VDB-54871. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
