Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 btrfs_ioctl_clone numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the btrfs_ioctl_clone function in fs/btrfs/ioctl.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35 might allow local users to obtain sensitive information via a BTRFS_IOC_CLONE_RANGE ioctl call.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 09/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2538. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1655 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49671 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2010:0664-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165606 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:040)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (49671), SecurityFocus (BID 41854†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27321†).
