A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function btrfs_ioctl_clone. Integer overflow in the btrfs_ioctl_clone function in fs/btrfs/ioctl.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35 might allow local users to obtain sensitive information via a BTRFS_IOC_CLONE_RANGE ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 09/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2538. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1655 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49671 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2010:0664-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165606 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:040)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
