Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The xfs implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35 does not look up inode allocation btrees before reading inode buffers, which allows remote authenticated users to read unlinked files, or read or overwrite disk blocks that are currently assigned to an active file but were previously assigned to an unlinked file, by accessing a stale NFS filehandle.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 09/30/2010 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2943. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1655 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52597 (SuSE 11.1 Security Update : Linux kernel (SAT Patch Numbers 4039 / 4042 / 4043)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165554 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:012)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (15155), Tenable (52597), SecurityFocus (BID 42527†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27552†). The entries VDB-55675, VDB-55566, VDB-55562 and VDB-55561 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
