Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Visio 2002/2003/2007 (Image Processing Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft Office Visio 2002 SP2, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP1 and SP2 does not properly validate attributes in Visio files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file, aka "Visio Attribute Validation Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 04/14/2010 by Bing Liu with Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0254. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/08/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45515 (MS10-028: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980094)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
