Microsoft Office Visio 2002 SP2, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP1 and SP2 does not properly calculate unspecified indexes associated with Visio files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file, aka "Visio Index Calculation Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 04/14/2010 by Bing Liu with Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0256. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/08/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45515 (MS10-028: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980094)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90590 (Microsoft Visio Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-028)).
