A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007/Xp (Office Suite Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing in the library VBE6.DLL of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. VBE6.DLL in Microsoft Office XP SP3, Office 2003 SP3, 2007 Microsoft Office System SP1 and SP2, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), and VBA SDK 6.3 through 6.5 does not properly search for ActiveX controls that are embedded in documents, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted document, aka "VBE6.DLL Stack Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 05/12/2010 by NSFocus Security Team with NSFOCUS Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0815. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 09/13/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46313 (MS10-031: Vulnerability in Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Could Allow Remote Code Execution (978213)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110121 (Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-031)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9741.
