A vulnerability was found in phpGroupWare (Groupware Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file about.php. The manipulation of the argument app with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in about.php in phpGroupWare (phpgw) before 0.9.16.016 allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary local files via a .. (dot dot) in the app parameter.

The weakness was disclosed 05/19/2010 with VUPEN Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0403 since 01/27/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:about.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46346 (Debian DSA-2046-1 : phpgroupware - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175124 (Debian Security Update for phpGroupWare (DSA-2046)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.16 eliminates this vulnerability.
