A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word 2003/2007 (Word Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component RTF Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Word 2003 SP3 and 2007 SP2 and SP3, Office 2008 and 2011 for Mac, and Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via crafted RTF data, aka "RTF Mismatch Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 05/08/2012 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS12-029 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0183 since 12/13/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Cr4sh and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59037 (MS12-029: Vulnerability in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2680352)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110181 (Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-029)).

Applying the patch KB2596917 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12309.
