win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, and Windows 8 Consumer Preview does not properly manage Keyboard Layout files, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Keyboard Layout File Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 05/08/2012 by Geoff McDonald, Tarjei Mandt and Nicolas Economou as MS12-034 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0181 since 12/13/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Cr4sh and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59042 (MS12-034: Combined Security Update for Microsoft Office, Windows, .NET Framework, and Silverlight (2681578)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. Applying the patch MS12-MAY is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
