A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known). This issue affects some unknown functionality in the library partmgr.sys of the component Partition Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Race condition in partmgr.sys in Windows Partition Manager in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that makes multiple simultaneous Plug and Play (PnP) Configuration Manager function calls, aka "Plug and Play (PnP) Configuration Manager Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2012 with Microsoft as MS12-033 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0178 since 12/13/2011. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59041 (MS12-033: Vulnerability in Windows Partition Manager Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2690533)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90800 (Microsoft Windows Partition Manager Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS12-033)).
Applying the patch MS12-MAY is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
