Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Excel 2007 SP2 and SP3 and 2010 Gold and SP1, Excel Viewer, and Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted spreadsheet that triggers incorrect handling of memory during opening, aka "Excel MergeCells Record Heap Overflow Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 05/08/2012 by Sean Larsson and Jun Mao with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS12-030 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0185 since 12/13/2011. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59038 (MS12-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2663830)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
