A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Excel 2007/2010 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as problematic. Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Excel 2007 SP2 and SP3 and 2010 Gold and SP1, Excel Viewer, and Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted spreadsheet that triggers incorrect handling of memory during opening, aka "Excel MergeCells Record Heap Overflow Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 05/08/2012 by Sean Larsson and Jun Mao with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS12-030 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0185 since 12/13/2011. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59038 (MS12-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2663830)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110160 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-030)).
Applying the patch MS12-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12339.
