Microsoft Excel 2003 SP3, 2007 SP2 and SP3, and 2010 Gold and SP1; Office 2008 and 2011 for Mac; Excel Viewer; and Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3 do not properly handle memory during the opening of files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted spreadsheet, aka "Excel Series Record Parsing Type Mismatch Could Result in Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 05/08/2012 by Sean Larsson and Jun Mao with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS12-030 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1847 since 03/22/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59046 (MS12-029 / MS12-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2680352 / 2663830) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110160 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-030)).
Applying the patch MS12-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12336.
