Microsoft Excel 2002 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 2002 (Spreadsheet Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in Microsoft Office Excel 2002 SP3, Office 2004 for Mac, Office 2008 for Mac, and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a malformed ExternName (0x23) record, aka "Excel Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-0823 and CVE-2010-1247.

The weakness was released 06/08/2010 by Nicolas Joly with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1249. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/15/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50066 (MS10-038: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2027452) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110124 (Microsoft Office Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS10-038)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9823.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58913), Tenable (50066), SecurityFocus (BID 40527†), OSVDB (65232†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26002†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-51811, VDB-53516, VDB-53511 and VDB-53510.
