Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WEBrick HTTP server in Ruby in Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8, and 10.6 before 10.6.4, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted URI that triggers a UTF-7 error page.
The weakness was presented 06/17/2010 by Kevin Finisterre (pagvac) with MIT Kerberos Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-0541 since 02/03/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75729 (openSUSE Security Update : ruby (openSUSE-SU-2011:0561-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119555 (CentOS Security Update for Ruby (CESA-2011:0908)).
Upgrading to version 10.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
