MUSCLE PCSC-Lite up to 1.5.3 winscard_svc.c MSGFunctionDemarshall memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MUSCLE PCSC-Lite and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function MSGFunctionDemarshall of the file winscard_svc.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The MSGFunctionDemarshall function in winscard_svc.c in the PC/SC Smart Card daemon (aka PCSCD) in MUSCLE PCSC-Lite before 1.5.4 might allow local users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via crafted SCARD_SET_ATTRIB message data, which is improperly demarshalled and triggers a buffer over-read, a related issue to CVE-2010-0407.

The weakness was presented 06/18/2010 with Debian as Bug 596426 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-4901. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75601 (openSUSE Security Update : libpcsclite1 (openSUSE-SU-2010:0500-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155641 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for pcsc-lite (ELSA-2010-0533)).

Upgrading to version 1.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (60446), Tenable (75601), SecurityFocus (BID 40758†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26670†). See VDB-53711 and VDB-53709 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
