A vulnerability was found in MUSCLE PCSC-Lite. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function MSGFunctionDemarshall of the file winscard_svc.c. Multiple buffer overflows in the MSGFunctionDemarshall function in winscard_svc.c in the PC/SC Smart Card daemon (aka PCSCD) in MUSCLE PCSC-Lite before 1.5.4 allow local users to gain privileges via crafted message data, which is improperly demarshalled.
The weakness was released 06/18/2010 with Debian as Bug 596426 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0407 since 01/27/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49257 (openSUSE Security Update : pcsc-lite (openSUSE-SU-2010:0612-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165210 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:017) - Deprecated).
Upgrading to version 1.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
