A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple CUPS up to 1.1.3 (Printing Software). This issue affects the function _WriteProlog of the file texttops.c of the component Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The _WriteProlog function in texttops.c in texttops in the Text Filter subsystem in CUPS before 1.4.4 does not check the return values of certain calloc calls, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference or heap memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted file.
The weakness was released 06/21/2010 as Bug 587746 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0542. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75456 (openSUSE Security Update : cups (openSUSE-SU-2010:1018-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118510 (Fedora Update for CUPS (FEDORA-2010-10388)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
