A vulnerability was found in WinZip 7.0/8.0/8.1 (File Compression Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component UUDeview Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the UUDeview package, as used in WinZip 6.2 through WinZip 8.1 SR-1, and possibly other packages, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a MIME archive with certain long MIME parameters.
The bug was discovered 01/13/2004. The weakness was presented 02/27/2004 by iDefense with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at winzip.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0333. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 45 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14456 (GLSA-200403-05 : UUDeview MIME Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115431 (WinZip MIME Archive Parsing Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at winzip.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2488. In this case the pattern Content-Type|3A| is used for detection.
