Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Apple Safari up to 5.0 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
WebKit in Apple Safari before 5.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.6 and Windows, and before 4.1.1 on Mac OS X 10.4; and webkitgtk before 1.2.6; accesses uninitialized memory during processing of the (1) :first-letter and (2) :first-line pseudo-elements in an SVG text element, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted document.
The weakness was released 07/30/2010 by Natalie Silvanovich (team509) with University of Szeged (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1785. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $25k-$100k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/21/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49246 (Fedora 13 : webkitgtk-1.2.4-1.fc13 (2010-14409)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
