Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 4.3.0 (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component Java Security Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-917. The product constructs all or part of an expression language (EL) statement in a framework such as a Java Server Page (JSP) using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended EL statement before it is executed. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
JBoss Seam 2 (jboss-seam2), as used in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 4.3.0 for Red Hat Linux, does not properly sanitize inputs for JBoss Expression Language (EL) expressions, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted URL. NOTE: this is only a vulnerability when the Java Security Manager is not properly configured.
The weakness was published 08/05/2010 by Meder Kydyraliev with Google Security Team as Bug 615956 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1871. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63940 (RHEL 4 / 5 : jboss-seam2 (RHSA-2010:0564)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11492 (JBoss Seam Parameterized EL Expressions Remote Code Execution Vulnerability). The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 12/10/2021 with a due date of 06/10/2022:
