Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Raphael Assenat libmikmod 3.1.12. Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

loaders/load_it.c in libmikmod, possibly 3.1.12, does not properly account for the larger size of name##env relative to name##tick and name##node, which allows remote attackers to trigger a buffer over-read and possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted Impulse Tracker file, a related issue to CVE-2010-2546. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2009-3995.

The weakness was shared 08/05/2010 by Tomas Hoger as Bug 614643 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2971 since 08/04/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/21/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49714 (CentOS 3 / 4 / 5 : mikmod (CESA-2010:0720)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
