A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word 2002/2003 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. Microsoft Office Word 2002 SP3 and 2003 SP3, and Office Word Viewer, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a malformed record in a Word file, aka "Word HTML Linked Objects Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2010 by Rodrigo Rubira Branco with Check Point (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1903. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/22/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48293 (MS10-056: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2269638)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110129 (Microsoft Office Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-056)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10129.
