Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache Struts (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component ParameterInterceptor. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The OGNL extensive expression evaluation capability in XWork in Struts 2.0.0 through 2.1.8.1, as used in Atlassian Fisheye, Crucible, and possibly other products, uses a permissive whitelist, which allows remote attackers to modify server-side context objects and bypass the "#" protection mechanism in ParameterInterceptors via the (1) #context, (2) #_memberAccess, (3) #root, (4) #this, (5) #_typeResolver, (6) #_classResolver, (7) #_traceEvaluations, (8) #_lastEvaluation, (9) #_keepLastEvaluation, and possibly other OGNL context variables, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-6504.
The weakness was published 07/13/2010 by Meder Kydyraliev (Website). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1870 since 05/10/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Meder Kydyraliev in Ruby and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47900 (Apache Struts 2 / XWork Remote Code Execution (safe check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119075 (VMware vCenter Orchestrator Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (VMSA-2011-0005)).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10037.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (14360), Tenable (47900), SecurityFocus (BID 41592†), OSVDB (66280†) and Secunia (SA59110†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
