The file-management scripts in the management GUI in Symantec Web Gateway 5.0.x before 5.0.3 allow remote attackers to (1) read or (2) delete arbitrary files via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 05/17/2012 with SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure as SYM12-006 (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. The public release was coordinated with Symantec. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0298 since 01/04/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by S2 Crew and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/previewProxyError.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59209 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM12-006) (version check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12555 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Security Vulnerability (SYM12-006)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
