A vulnerability was found in Symantec Web Gateway 5.0.2.8 (Firewall Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function exec of the file spywall/adminConfig.php of the component Perl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The management GUI in Symantec Web Gateway 5.0.x before 5.0.3 does not properly restrict access to application scripts, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by (1) injecting crafted data or (2) including crafted data.

The weakness was released 06/27/2012 by SecuriTeam with S2 Crew as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. The public release was coordinated with Symantec. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0297 since 01/04/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by S2 Crew and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/adminConfig.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59208 (Symantec Web Gateway ipchange.php Shell Command Injection (SYM12-006) (intrusive check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12555 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Security Vulnerability (SYM12-006)).

Upgrading to version 5.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12413.
